Private Medical Insurance

Skip the waiting list and choose where and when you are treated. Private medical insurance puts you in control of your healthcare.

What does Private Medical Insurance Cover

Private medical insurance gives you faster access to diagnosis, specialist referrals, and treatment, with greater choice over when, where, and by whom you are treated. For many people it removes the uncertainty of waiting and puts them in control of their own healthcare.

Most UK residents have access to NHS healthcare, but waiting times for certain treatments can be significant. Private medical insurance sits alongside that, giving you an alternative route when time or choice matters.

Type of benefit paid

Most policies cover the cost of private consultations, diagnostic tests, surgery, and inpatient and day-care treatment. Some policies also include mental health support, physiotherapy, and cancer care. The level of cover varies by policy, so it is worth understanding exactly what is and is not included before you commit.

Pre-existing conditions are often excluded, particularly on standard policies, though some insurers will cover these after a qualifying period or on a moratorium basis – which is when pre-existing conditions may become eligible for cover after a set period without treatment. Your adviser will explain how this affects your options.

Important considerations

The right policy depends on what matters most to you. Key things to think through are the level of cover you need, whether you want to include outpatient treatment as well as inpatient, the size of the excess you are comfortable with, and whether you want to add extras such as dental or optical cover.

A higher excess generally means a lower premium. If you are primarily looking for cover against serious or unexpected conditions rather than routine treatment, choosing a higher excess can make the policy significantly more affordable.

  • What type of cover do you need?
  • What is the excess on the policy?
  • How much will the premiums be?
  • What is the waiting period?
  • What is covered by the policy?
  • What are the exclusions on the policy?

Our advisers will talk you through the options, explain the differences between policies clearly, and find the right level of cover for your circumstances and budget. The consultation is free with no obligation.
